Packaging revolution: what GCs must know to navigate the evolving legal, regulatory and commercial landscape of Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging (EPR)

-

Roundtable

New Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules for packaging came into force on 1 January 2025 introducing significant new legal and financial obligations for retailers. EPR will affect most businesses that supply packaging in the UK, particularly brand owners of branded packaged products, and those who import branded products into the UK from overseas.

For General Counsel and in-house legal teams, EPR introduces complex legal, operational, and reputational considerations which they must help the business navigate.

This roundtable will explore:

  • How legal leaders can steer their organisations through the evolving EPR landscape
  • Key 'watch outs' and lessons learned from businesses at the coalface of EPR
  • How legal teams can guide the business through investigations by the Environment Agency
  • Navigating the allocation of responsibility for EPR compliance in commercial contracts
  • How legal functions can lead in turning a compliance burden into a commercial advantage.

We're also delighted to be joined by Naomi Brandon-Bravo, Sustainability Policy Adviser at the British Retail Consortium, to share expert insights on how the retail sector is preparing for EPR.
